Part 1 · Belief 5 — The Doctrine of God
The Holy Spirit
What we believe
God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He is as much a person as are the Father and the Son. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ's life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth.

Jesus once made a startling promise to His friends: "It is to your advantage that I go away" (John 16:7). How could losing Jesus be an advantage? Because He was sending Someone to live not merely beside them but inside them — the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not an impersonal force or a vague feeling. He is God Himself, as truly a Person as the Father and the Son, come close enough to make His home in a human heart. If you have ever felt a quiet tug toward God, a sorrow over wrong, a longing for something more — you have already met Him.
A Person, not a power
Jesus did not call the Spirit "it" but "He" — "the Helper... the Spirit of truth" (John 14:16, 17). The Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He teaches and reminds (John 14:26), He guides and speaks (John 16:13). Only a person can do those things. He is fully God, present at Creation, "hovering over the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2). To welcome the Spirit is not to tap into an energy — it is to welcome a divine Friend.
The One who draws you to Christ
The Spirit's first work in your life is to point you to Jesus. He "will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness" (John 16:8) and "will bear witness about me," Jesus said (John 15:26). Every honest pull you feel toward God is the Spirit at work. He never draws attention to Himself; like a friend who steps aside so you can see someone you love, He shines a light on Christ. The very fact that you are studying this is evidence He is already drawing you.
The One who makes you new
You cannot change your own heart by willpower — but the Spirit can. Jesus said no one can enter God's kingdom unless they are "born of the Spirit" (John 3:5, 6). Where He lives, He grows a new kind of life: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness" (Galatians 5:22, 23). He does it gently and over time, transforming us "from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:18). You do not have to manufacture the change. You only have to keep saying yes to the One who is making it.

Reflect
The Holy Spirit is the most polite Person you will ever know — He waits to be invited. This week, pray a short, honest prayer each morning: "Holy Spirit, fill me today. Make Jesus real to me, and make me a little more like Him." Then watch through the day for the gentle nudges — a prompting to forgive, to pray, to be kind. That is Him, walking with you.
